The Last Sermon

August 16, 2009 1 comment

My current read is “The Book of Muhammad” by Mehru Jaffar. I liked the inspiring chapter of the last sermon, that I would like to reproduce for all.

In 631 AD after performing Hajj for the last time, Muhammad(pbuh) spoke to 124,000 Muslims from Mount Arafat.

He said, ‘Oh people, lend me an attentive ear. I know not whether after this year I shall ever be amongst you again.

‘Oh people, just as you regard this month, this day this city as sacred, so reagard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners.

‘Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.

‘Do not take usury, this is forbidden to you.

‘Aid the poor and clothe them as you would clothe yourselves.

‘Remember! One day you will appear before Allah and answer for you deeds. So, beware! Do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

‘Oh people! No prophet or apostle will come after me and no new faith will be born…It is true that you have certain rights with regard to your own women, but they also have rights over you. Treat them well for they are your support.

‘Reflect on my words. I leave behind two things, the Koran and my example, and if you follow these guides you will not fail.

‘Listen to me in earnest. Worship God, say your prayers, fast during the months of Ramadan, and give your wealth in charity.

‘All the believers are brothers. All hav ethe same rights and same responsibilities.

‘No one is allowed to take from another what he does not allow him of his own free will. NOne is higher than the other unless he is higher in virtue.

‘All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others, and those to others again, and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly.’

Muhammad (pbuh) then turned his face towards that heavens and said, ‘Be my witness, Oh Allah, that I have conveyed your message to your people.’

And from the foothills of Arafat the united voice of thousands of Muslims echoed, ‘My Lord, surely you have.’
